The canal is not a long term solution. It is panic management. We would like to see a detailed twenty year plan for the entire river that includes much larger bridges as the current bridges are causing excessive erosion.
We feel the canal proposal is far too imprecise and is like asking the public to sign a blank cheque. A more detailed plan of contours, rock outcrops, bed rock, river path and existing trees should be detailed.
The property below the canal is detrimentally affected as the water speed is increased by the canal causing erosion and flooding due to a decrease in speed where the canal ends.
The gabions in the past have not stood up to the test of time yet this project is determined to repeat past mistakes.
Working in the river bed involves digging out and disturbing centuries of compacted soil that would not be disturbed by floods in the next ten years. We could rather rehabilitate the areas with large local indigenous trees.
A canal is the ideal getaway for crime.
A canal like a gutter leads water quickly away leaving no pools of water for birds, insects, fish, frogs or animals to drink. A whole ecology is lost.
